Differences Between the DIP and DIPUM Books

The key difference between the books is that Digital Image Processing (DIP) deals primarily with the theoretical foundation of digital image processing, while Digital Image Processing Using MATLAB (DIPUM) is a book whose main focus is the use of MATLAB for image processing.  In other words, DIP covers the fundamentals of digital image processing and DIPUM covers the software implementation of image processing algorithms using MATLAB.  DIP assumes no knowledge about image processing on the part of the reader. On the other hand, all discussions of theoretical concepts in DIPUM are brief and it is assumed that the reader has knowledge of image processing (at approximately the level of the material in the DIP book).

There are two principal ways to utilize the complementary strengths of the books in an academic environment.  One is to use DIP as the basis for the fundamentals part of a formal course, and use DIPUM as the book for a companion laboratory.  The other is to offer a formal DIP course in one term and follow in the next term with a special-topics course based on DIPUM.  At the end of this period, the student will be well-trained in the fundamentals of image processing and in the art of prototyping algorithms and solutions using MATLAB software tools.  We have provided extensive sample materials on-line to allow detailed evaluation of the contents in the books.

[NOTE: Digital Image Processing, 3rd ed. (DIP/3e) has a 2008 copyright and is the current version in use in the Western Hemisphere.  DIP/2e is still in use in the Eastern Hemisphere; DIP/2e is fully supported in this web site while it undergoes an update for use in the Eastern Hemisphere. That work is in progress.]
